I have enjoyed the start to the 2008 Olympics today. I saw a few of the events. Men's and women's swimming, beach volleyball, and men's gymnastics. It does evoke an heroic spirit. I have such admiration for the level of skill and fitness of these athletes. The commitment it takes to achieve even a place on the USA team let alone a medal is so amazing. I listened to comments of Tim Dagget tonight as he critiqued the young gymnast who earned a place on the team only after one US man had to bow out. He kept talking about whether or not he deserved to be there. One of my pet peeves is "has been" TV analyists/announcers/former athletes of the sport who overstate their opinions that demean the very athlete who should be encouraged and uplifted.
So I say to all of the athletes representing the USA and working to achieve personal goals, we are here rooting for you and celebrating your right to be there! Let the games begin!
Cheers!!
Loved your comment on Sunday Selah over at my 'place'...
ReplyDeleteHow can the commentator even question if this young athlete 'deserves' to be in Beijing? He must have been putting in the training and hours and drive and passion to be in the alternate pool for the team. He may be even better equipped mentally, having come so close to making the original team--he now has a second chance!
Blessings!
