Need an alignment, rotation or BODY check?

My 20 year old daughter called. "Mom, I really need my oil changed. Could you loan me $30 until pay day?" Of course I agreed. She works full time and manages her own expenses on a entry level wireless company salary.
The oil change mechanic noted that one tire was "bald" and needed to be replaced.

I was curious. We had bought four new tires for this car one year ago. How could it be "bald"!!!
So she took her car to the new tire establishment where she (I) bought the set. No longer under warranty because she had not had them routinely rotated. Oops! You mean there is a maintenance schedule for tires? Daughter, "But they didn't tell me that when I got them!" We purchased two new tires, had them balanced and aligned. A new lesson learned.

I thought of my recent experience with my husband. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had it surgically removed and all is well. But, here is how the story went. 2006, normal PSA (test). 2007, normal PSA. May, 2008 Instead of 4 it's a 5. July, 2008 It's now a 5.9. Next biopsy, then surgery and now...Cancer reTIRED! We were so fortunate he had that routine test.

I have always been a by the book routine exam kind of girl.
Well baby exams....check
Immunizations.......check
Dental every 6 mos. ....check
Vision test every 12 mos....check
Gyn exams and mammograms yearly....check
And now PSA, and Blood work up yearly....check.

It turns out, our bodies need proper maintenance as well. We cannot ignore these tests of modern design. Not for ourselves or our children. I want to do the best I can to insure a nice long life and I try on a daily basis to be appropriately concerned for my health.

I am a control freak so I want to control what I can and I can at the very least have a check-up. I do not want any surprise moles, bumps, or knots that I didn't know about. I want to find it early, catch it small and treat it the best I can.

I do know that many health issues arise that are "out of our control", not preventable or sometimes untreatable. I know that even with our due diligence, illness happens.
However, even though there is so much we do not have control over, we can check our tires every 5000 miles, rotate them and check the alignment for the health of our cars and our precious cargo.
And, we can get our own health check-ups on a timely basis for the good of that precious cargo.
Do you practice preventive health?
Do you treat your body as well as you do your vehicles?

Abundance is living every day for a healthy tomorrow!

  2. I probably don't do a yearly physical but I do everything else by the book. I guess I need to add that to my list since I am not in my 20's anymore :(

  3. Well, since you've already visited my blog and commented you know my story. I use to be so aware of my health, but once my children came on the scene, I'm sad to say I allowed my aches and pains to take a back seat to the "squeaky wheels" tied to my apron strings! I'm happy to report I am getting my back, back into shape. Thanks for the lovely reminder!

  4. I have the kids' checks under control. Because I have to go into Louiville to do the car stuff...I am all over it, I can shop as well while I am there. But for me, besides dental, I have gone to the better off not knowing. I KNOW I need to do my pap and ....eeeks I dare say it....40 year well check....but I just don't want to do it!

PS, it is scheduled, I just hope it isn't when Aunt FLo is here. Because then I will have to reschedule it, and it will be three months later!

  5. There was a time, when we had insurance, when we could afford insurance, that I always had routine check-ups. Now, since I don't have it, can't afford it, it doesn't happen. If the company you work for doesn't offer insurance to their workers, or stops offering it, you just can't find coverage if you're over 50 and have ever been ill.

  9. i agree...my Dad (and i'm totally a Daddy's girl too) got the dx of prostate cancer 2 1/2 years ago and he just got his second year clean bill of health. shhoooooo! i am so relieved...and since dad's PSA was found very early, his treatments worked quite well and the cancer was contained! praise God!

  11. There are lots of us not taking care of ourselves like we should - that is for sure!

Have a good weekend - Kellan

  12. This is a great post, and I completely agree -- we care more for our cars, than we do for our bodies.
Having said that, and now in my mid 30's, I decided that I needed to get in for a physical this week.
    Ask me if it happened.

  13. Yes!

And don't forget the dreaded colonoscopy! The prep work stinks (tee hee), but it's so worth it. If my mom had had one she would probably still be here.

  14. Important message and great post!!

I definitely do better with the kids than myself!!

Glad to hear your husband is recovering!

  15. My husband takes great care of our cars... too bad he's not in charge of my body too!

    That tire is scary looking!

  16. I should post this on my refrigerator. As much of a control-freak that I am, I do tend to let my health slide. When a friend of mine told me she would have her annual check-ups every month if they would let her, I rearranged my thinking! Even though I won't go overboard, I have gotten much better about my yearly exams. Although I'm still not 100% responsible for getting all of my check-ups scheduled as efficiently as I should.

Thanks for the reminder that we need to be serviced regularly! I think I'll go schedule that mammogram now.

PS Enjoyed getting the e-mail from you. I've been doing some detective work on the side (not officially... just looking for a lost family). I'll drop you a note and say hi!

  17. Ooooh! What an awesome post! You are so right. We have to take care of ourselves. Our health affects so many people - our family, our friends. If you want to live your best possible life then you should stay in control of your health. Of course, that is from one control freak to another. Ha! Ha!

  18. Dear Superior Scribbler: Sorry for the "canned" and unrelated nature of this comment, but I wanted to get to as many of you tonite as possible. One of the things that we at Scholastic Scribe are most proud of is the Silly Sunday Sweepstakes. Several of you are already familiar with the arbitrary and quite inane weekly attempt at humor...for you, and for those of you who have not yet played Sx3, I urge you to drop by Sunday to see what's up. Oh, and congrats on being named a SS. You earned it!

  19. Excellent analogy Coach....we can ALWAYS do with a reminder to regularly have a health check-up.

Its a strange phonomenum that we are always happy to encourage our friends to go to the doctor but we sometimes don't heed our own advice.

Since I turned 50 I realised how important it was to have a healthy body (and mind) so I am very diligent in 'having my body serviced'......my car and I go in together (different places, although my mechanic is easy on the eye, if you get my drift) and we both come out shiny, happy beings.

    Take care
    Peggy

  20. Very good reminder -- about the cars and the person! I'm not good on either and know about the tires, but still don't do it like I should!

I'm glad you do those routine checks. It is an inspiration for the rest of us to do so as well. And I'm glad your Hubby did too and is doing OK with the cancer.

  21. Great parallels........I try to take care of my body as well as I can. This year especially I have tried to be fit and healthy and stay on top of exams......since this has certainly not always been the case.
