The Runaway Pumpkin was written by Kevin Lewis and Illustrated by S.D. Schindler.
The Publishers Weekly said this about the book:
"In Lewis's rhyming tale, it is Halloween day when an enormous pumpkin bounces downhill and through the Baxter family farm. At the sight of this "thumpety/ bumpety/ thumpin'/ bumpin'/ round and rolly/ runaway pumpkin!" the Baxters think not of personal safety but of Granny's pumpkin recipes. Schindler, in amusing but untidy compositions, gives each person an astonished expression and a thought-balloon flash of pumpkin bread, soup or pie. Crisis averted, the resourceful family carves a humongous jack-o'-lantern while Granny bakes. A solid choice for children who prefer a slapstick celebration to chills and thrills. Ages 4-7. (Sept.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information."1. Predicting:
For predicting skills in this book focus on the page where the children are walking up the hill to see the pumpkin. Imagine what would happen if the pumpkin rolled down the hill.
2. Reasoning:
- Talk about why the family thinks of food while the pumpkin is rolling. This is a great opportunity to think about the foods your family enjoys in the fall. What food do you think about when you hear the word Halloween? Fall?
- Talk about other ways we use pumpkins. (Porch decoration, carving etc.)
- Extend discussion to other foods such as apples (caramel apple, apple pie, applesauce), corn (popcorn, tortillas, chips).
- For older children: Talk about the ingredients you might need to make one of the foods in the story.
The rhyme that is included on each page is a great one to have your child join in reciting. Also help your child try to remember the sequence of the action: Where did the pumpkin roll first, second, third.
4. Activity:
Cooking is such a great language activity. Bake something made with pumpkin and let your child follow the recipe. Talk about ingredients, amounts, utensils needed (teaspoon, cups, bowls, loaf pans, spatula, cookie sheet, oven, temperature, mix, pour, add, stir, cook, bake, boil, sift), and spices needed. Let them taste the spices. Take pictures of your child adding each ingredient and performing each step of the process. Print them out and you have your own sequencing cards to talk about the process later. Great for repetition and auditory memory!

I want to also share with you a story about Mitchell Whitaker. A 10 yr. old young man who lost his battle with cancer September 27, 2007. He has an amazing family. His mother Tracy ran in her first marathon this June in memory of her son. She is dedicated to raising money for Team in Training and here is how you can join in.Tracy and 40 of her friends will run in the PF Chang Rock-n-Roll Marathon in January in honor of Tracy's 40th birthday. Her friends are wanting to raise $144,000. Their team website is Mitchell's Angels. Tracy also has an amazing blog where you can read about her story. Go Mitch Go! If you visit the site please tell her Avtcoach sent you!
Now your part is easy! Tracy's friend and my blog friend JenX67 will give $1 up to $250 for each unique comment made on this post!!! That is right, all you have to do is comment on this post and you will be contributing to a worthy cause! Also visit JenX67 and thank her for her contribution! The money goes to support one of Tracy's friends Stefunkc who is participating. The money goes to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Stop by Stef and Jen's sites and thank them for their efforts! Spread the blog love!
I have included Dr. Seuss's "The Foot Book" on my list for today because that was one of Mitchell's favorite books. When you read it to your child please say a prayer for Mitchell's family as they learn every day how to celebrate Mitchell's life and how to live with their loss.
As many of you know my husband has recently been diagnosed with Cancer. He has a great expectation for a cure. Children with cancer have very difficult journeys. Mitchell had a difficult battle for two years. Children with cancer and their families need our prayers and our support. Commenting on a blog is the least we can do to help with this effort!
Abundance is...our memories of a special child, a team dedicated to finding a cure, and a mother's love for her child.
I love the run away pumpkin. I read it every year.. We make a slope and have kids race pumpkins after we read it. We see which one makes it the farthest.. and then we talk about why we think this happens.. My little kiddo's love it..
ReplyDeleteI am headed over to the link that you have placed on your site.. Childhood cancer research is really near and dear to my heart.. I have a dear friend who is also experiencing it right now.. I hate that anyone has to face cancer but it breaks my heart to see it happen to a helpless child..
Wonderful book recommendations. I always love coming to read about your choices for new blogs to read and books. What a wonderful cause, you are a great example of how we can all make a difference in the big and small things we do in life.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun sounding story. My daughter's speech therapist worked with her on a (make-believe) recipe for honey cake last week (a typical Jewish New Year food), spending time on the name of each item, it's place and function in the recipe, etc. Very similar to your tip #4 :).
ReplyDeleteI'm glad my comment will also help in a small way to raise awareness for childhood cancer. When I was just 4 years old I lost my best friend to leukemia. He fought the good fight, but it was just too hard for his little body. So here's my comment - for Mitchell, and for Stephen. Never forgotten.
We just read The Runaway Pumpkin the other night during bedtime stories. I love that book.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great cause you are featuring today! Happy to comment for the sake of a special group of ladies working for a wonderful cause.
Great book recommendations. We are huge book worms around here! I will have to check these out for the little ones.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great cause you are participating in. I love it when the blogoshpere comes together to make a difference!
Thank you, so much. I also am believing for your husband's full recovery. That post you wrote still resonates with me. I'm glad we Okie women have connected via the Blogosphere. Blessings on you and also the Whitakers.
ReplyDeleteMy mother-in-law just sent us the Runaway Pumpkin this month, and my two-year-old LOVES it! He requests that I read it nearly each day.
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to make some pumpkin bread and let him help me with it. Great idea.
This is great! Thanks again for the great books to read. I am off to leave a comment (anything to support kid's cancer treatment is good "in my book." Do stop by later...there is something for you at my blog :)
ReplyDeleteFantastic post! I left a comment to earn some dough!! Go Mitch Go!!! We love the Foot Book!! We will say a prayer the next time we read it. The Runway Pumpkin sounds like a good one. We will have to look for it. I bet you have the best book collection!
ReplyDeleteThe Foot Book is a favorite of my son's and now baby girls!

ReplyDeleteGosh, children with cancer. It should be an oxymoron. Just doesn't make sense to me. I loved your Activity section re: cooking. I am trying to get my 5yo in the kitch with me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteI will have to go out & buy The run away pumpkin. I'm sure my girls would love it.
I am looking forward to doing some pumpkin cooking with my girls too. They love to 'help' me in the kitchen.
I am having a great time looking over your past posts. See ya around :)
My kids love the foot book too! Dr Seuss is great!
ReplyDeleteI love children's books. My kids favorite was "Are You My Mother"
ReplyDeleteWhat a great thing you are helping to do. Keep it up.
I found my way to you via The Zen in You, and I am so glad that I did. I am wondering (and I couldn't find out quickly from your blog) what does AVT stand for? Also, I love your book recommendation.
ReplyDeleteWell, duh! I just figured out AVT.
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing this, I love Stephanie so much, she is my FAVORITE neighbor. Her committment to this cause is amazing. I know she doesn't like to run!
ReplyDeleteOh I hope that our library has the Runaway Pumpkin! Thanks again for such great book ideas! Got any suggestions for a Princess Halloween book?! LOL.
ReplyDeleteOkay, this one is me. The real me. The one running the half marathon. The one freaking out about the whole fund raising thing.
ReplyDeleteAnd...The one completely overwhelmed with the generosity of a good friend, and a complete stranger. I feel so blessed. Thank you:C)
Hey great pumpkin story and a worthy cause - Go runners
ReplyDeletegreat cause
I nearly missed coming here but luckily started to read your Wordful Wednesday and didn't get past the first paragraph.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely act of kindness by JenX67. It would be wonderful if one day the word Cancer did not send shivers up and down us and a drug could cure it.....it will happen if more money is given to research companies like the Leukemia Society, so thank you again JenX67.
I repeat AVT Coach's words - Abundance is...our memories of a special child, a team dedicated to finding a cure, and a mother's love for her child.
Peggy
just wanted to say hi and add a comment, what a generous friend!
ReplyDeleteMy girls loved the Foot Book! I can still hear their little voices 'reading' along with me.
ReplyDeleteGo Tracy and friends!
This is such a great post! I love this book and I will read it again to my grandson!
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing this!
I'll have to go to the library and see if we can find The Runaway Pumpkin. Please tell JenX67 that she rocks for donating through your comments on this post.
ReplyDeleteThe Foot Book is one of our favorites! Love the pumpkin ideas! Need to try those!
ReplyDeleteI think childhood cancer is every parent's nightmare! The suffering a child goes through is so painful to see. An acquaintance of mine just had a child the same age as my oldest daughter go through aggressive cancer treatment for a type of osteomyelitis (a bone cancer). So scary to not know how long your child may be with or if they will be with you in the near future!
ReplyDeleteOur neighbors lost their precious 4 year old daughter to cancer last year. It is my hope and prayer that no child or parent should have have to go through cancer.
ReplyDeleteWhat a generous thing for JenX67 to do... You Go Girl!
Recommendations nicely done!! Great ideas for engaging kids in the story!
ReplyDeleteI love team in training and did some marathons with them back in 1997! Pre-kids!
Prayers for Mitchell's family and way to go Tracy! Hope your husband is doing better soon!
Laura
Thanks, we love books, and it's always nice to hear other people's thoughts.
ReplyDeleteWhat is better than the Foot Book. Love Dr Seuss.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck on raising money and to the gals running all I can say is wow.
Love Dr Seuss! And I, too, will have to look for "The Runaway Pumpkin." Good luck with the fundraiser!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea of a way to raise $$ and awareness.
ReplyDeleteWe just heard the runaway pumpkin for the first time on Tuesday for story time, loved it! Of course we have read our foot book to needing replacement!
wow. comments don't ususally make me cry, but the one from the person who said her b/f died from leukemia at age four left puddles on the table. these words mean so much to Mitch's mom: "Never Forgotten." Thanks, AVT, for casting this net deeper into the sea of awareness.
ReplyDeleteWay to raise Awareness. And personally for me Cancer Sucks!
ReplyDeleteIt's Friday and I'm just now seeing your post...been a bit behind this week. What a wonderful fundraiser. I've never heard of the Runaway Pumpkin either. You always have great books suggestions for us.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great cause. I do hope that you all are able to raise enough money to reach your goal. I hope and pray that some day soon we all can rest a little easier knowing that there is indeed a cure for cancer. Until then hats off to all those stepping out in order to make that dream closer to a reality.
ReplyDeleteoh cool, am going to have to see if i can get the runaway pumpkin book here in the UK! Looks like a fun read! hehe
ReplyDeleteHope you make the 250 comments hon' as you say..it IS the least we can do :)
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Mitchell. I lost a very dear friend on the 28th to mylemoa. :(
ReplyDeleteAVT coach-Thank you so much for spreading the news for me. Jenx67 did something amazing for me and you continued spreading the wave of awareness. I am forever grateful. I feel like I've gained a friend!
